Coco Planets

Coco Planets is a cereal adored by space dinosaurs—at least that’s my take on it.

For one of my favorite projects during my undergraduate education, our class came up with a name for a fictional cereal and our professor provided a few quality stock photos, some relevant copy and nutrition facts, and a lovely “Engel Foods” logo (an inside joke). The rest was up to each of us: create a mascot and thoughtful design to reach our intended audience.

“Coco Planets: They’re out of this world.™” Loved by people and space dinosaurs alike—and probably by people who like space dinosaurs.

A front view of the box that features a green dinosaur wearing a retro astronaut helmet in outer space gleefuly holding a tiny spoon behind a big bowl of cocoa cereal. Cocoa spheres float and glow as if they were planets. Reads: “Coco Planets: They’re out of this world.™” Also has some additional important legal info about food type and net weight.A side view of the box that features a list of key aspects that make the cereal special: Reads: “What makes it special. Real cocoa, organic oats, no artificial flavors or preservatives, no high fructose corn syrup. Yes, it’s made with healthy, organic ingredients. But we’re pretty sure the only word your kids will hear is cocoa. Real, rich cocoa. Did we get your attention too?”A back view of the box featuring nine cards. One card is an explanatory card, and the other eight feature a picture of a planet in our solar system with one or two facts. Reads: “Planets of our Solar System. There are 8 large planets that orbit the Sun. Take a closer look at each one! Mercury. Closest to the sun. It’s orbit lasts only 88 days. Venus. The hottest planet in the solar system (480° F). Earth. The only planet that has life. Mars. Has both North and South polar ice caps. Jupiter. Weighs more than 300 times the mass of Earth. Saturn. Estimated to have at least 18 moons. Uranus. Its ammonia and methane core give its bluish color. Neptune. Composed of the gases helium and hydrogen.”Another side view of the box. It features the nutrition label.A die cut of the box
